KISR organized a workshop entitled Regional Workshop for the Development of Ambient Air Monitoring Network for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the West Asia Region in collaboration with the Research Center for Toxic Compounds in the Environment (RECETOX) in the Czech Republic. At the opening ceremony, Dr. Naji Al-Mutairi said that the efforts exerted by the international community to limit POPs should be monitored. He indicated that the workshop aims at bringing together experts to chart out a plan to monitor the levels of POPs in the atmosphere in the West Asia region. He confirmed that there is a need to limit the primary and secondary sources of such components in many developing countries that lack the capabilities to monitor POPs.
Dr. Lulwa Ali, a researcher at the Environmental and Urban Development Division, and the Head of the Organizing Committee, said that the workshop mainly aims at enhancing knowledge and awareness on the existing activities of the regional and international monitoring programs. She added that the workshop also aims at obtaining a better understanding of the coordination and cooperation process that could be made at the national and regional levels in order to establish an ambient air-monitoring network in the countries in the West Asia Region.
