MICROBIOLOGIST

Background: The successful candidate will become a member of the Natural Water Resources and Development Program at KISR. The aim of the program is to sustainably optimize the use and management of natural water resources.

Major duties: To identify and quantify microbiological constituents in groundwater and soil; to decipher the role of microbes in the evolution of groundwater quality; to characterize different types of water through their microbial contents, and to identify sources of recharge through analysis of groundwater and surface water.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a PhD in microbiology or a related scientific field and a minimum of five years of relevant experience, or an MSc in microbiology or a related scientific field and a minimum of ten years of relevant experience. Applicants should be versatile, with abilities to use appropriate techniques and methods in field surveys and sample collection; culturing, identification and quantification of microbial populations in samples in the laboratory, interpretation of the role of the microbial assemblage in water quality; and determination of the contributions of various sources to a water body on the basis of microbial contents. Applicants with expertise in bigeochemical modeling will be preferred. Applicants should have demonstrated abilities to develop, market and execute research proposals, as well as in disseminating outcomes through publication.
