At the opening of the Scientific Week that was held by KISR , in collaboration with the Kuwait Society of Engineering (KSE), Dr. Salem Al-Hajraf, KISR’s Renewable Energy Program Manager, gave a lecture entitled “Together Towards a Sustainable Development.” In his lecture, Dr. Al-Hajraf stated that renewable energy can protect the countries of the region and their modern civilization from perishing, and help it achieve sustainable development by diversifying energy and economic resources.
Dr. Al-Hajraf added that investing in renewable energy techniques is necessary in view with the expected increase in global population, that is projected to reach 9 billion by 2050, and that this energy is one of the most important factors in achieving sustainable development. He pointed out that there is a view that oil in Kuwait will last for 60 to 70 years and that there are two viewpoints regarding solar or renewable energy in general: the first rejects it is an alternative to oil, a source that national economies of the Gulf countries depend on; and based on the expectations and studies related to the finite nature of oil reserves, which makes it necessary to find alternatives to ensure economic stability in a future which is not completely oil-dependent, the second viewpoint is pro renewable energy.
