The challenge of the  research program is to support the production of food and feed in an arid environment, taking account of national needs, fragile ecosystem, and limited natural resources. Another challenge is the ongoing large-scale terrestrial degradation that has led to the loss of ecosystem services and biodiversity in Kuwait. Therefore, the program directly addresses two challenges: (1) Develop sustainable agriculture as it is a key element of sustainable development and is integral to the long-term viability of the environment and the preservation of nonrenewable resources in Kuwait. (2) Develop methods to assess and measure the degradation of terrestrial ecosystem, and propose measures to fully restore the normal functioning of the ecosystem for the provision of greater ecosystem services, including urban landscape ecosystems,   complying with international treaties and resolutions.



The DAEP safeguards the health and safety of Kuwait’s population by developing techniques to enhance the quality and avail ability of locally produced agricultural products. It will also develop local strategies to oversee the implementation of the  plan to repair the environmental damage with the goal to conserve biodiversity and enhance greenery sustainably.

Program  Thrusts

  • Protected Agriculture: Optimize the production of vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants under the innovative protected agriculture technology.
  • Document Terrestrial Biodiversity and Strategies for Degraded Ecosystems: Assess  of ecosystem resilience through long- term monitoring and repair damage for restoration to fully functional ecosystem, including urban ecosystem, complialing with international treaties.
  • Advance Open Field Agriculture: Advance forage farming practices and integrate   forage and sheep production in small holdings.
  • Optimized Landscape Practices for Urban Settings: Establish  state-of-the-art facility for ornamental horticulture and landscaping.
