Challenge

The program addresses specified challenges focusing on assessing atmospheric, aquatic, and terrestrial oil and non-oil pollution, identifying the presence of emerging pollutants in the environmental compartments: assessing the environmental impacts caused by various industrial and commercial sectors, and trans-boundary (atmospheric) transport of pollutants. The other challenge is to improve waste management practices by mitigating the adverse effects of pollutants, on  the environment ensuring ecosystem health.

Goal

The program aims to support  the sustainable management of Kuwait’s environment by working with policy makers to ensure that the nation’s industrial practices are in accordance with international standards. Studies are also focused on the environmental impacts caused by the climate change, newly developed technologies and practices, emerging pollutants, and waste management.

Program Thrusts

  • There are three solution areas that the research program pursues.
  • Identification of legacy and emerging pollutants in the Kuwait’s environment and assessment of their impact on air, marine, and terrestrial ecosystem.
  • Environmental impact assessment (EIA) of national importance.
  • Management of waste disposal.
