The aim of PRC is to achieve its vision through collaboration with international partners. These partners will include academic and research institutions to support building the center’s capacity in selected technical fields, specifically in enhanced oil recovery technology, advanced reservoir characterization, petroleum chemistry, reactor engineering, and materials science. In addition, the center will work jointly with selected specialized oil companies that have wider experience in process and product development, commercialization, and marketing to ensure that the outputs of the center reach the commercialization stage

Key Achievements

Assessment of the Control Water Injection System in Oil Field: Increasing heavy oil production by water in section in the oil fields, monitoring the water quality, conducting special characterization, measuring the variables, and monitoring injected water.

Improvement of Heavy Oil Recovery Through Asphaltene Inhibitor Screening: Investigating the problem of asphaltene precipitation and the performance of different asphaltene inhibitors in the oil field while using heavy oils.

Upgrading of Heavy Oil: Helping refineries understand the behavior of various heteroatoms available in heavy crude oils by asphaltene investigation during the thermal cracking of residual oils.

Optimization of the Refinery Process and Catalyst Development: Developing new techniques to prepare a prototype catalyst for mild hydrocracking of residual oils to enhance middle distillate yield

Enhancing of Refinery Process Using Nanosized Metallic Sulfide Catalyst: Developing nano-catalysts for the conversion of heavy oil fractions using nanosized catalysts by in situ thermal decomposition of the emulsions of water in oil.

Corrosion Mitigation: Providing Kuwait’s oil industry with guidance on corrosion and cracking of facilities and how to mitigate such impacts.

Future Challenges

  • Improving the refining activity in light of changing petroleum feedstock through developing cost-effective methods and utilizing improved catalysts aimed at improving the conversion of residual oils and the production of clean transportation fuels.
  • Expanding the throughput of Kuwaiti refineries and improving their flexibility to cope with changes in market demands with an emphasis on improved separation methods.
  • Expanding the Kuwait petrochemical industry and end-user segments by developing customized polymer and specialty chemical products focusing on expanding the use of polymeric products.
  • Improving reliability of the oil production facilities and refineries through assessing the structural integrity of equipment in terms of corrosion and metallurgy adverse effects and identifying the best mitigation approaches.
