Using Sulfur to Improve Asphalt Paving Mixtures in Kuwait
Enhancing the performance of local roads and highways
In 2012, the Kuwait Oil Company awarded a project to KISR to investigate the improvement of asphalt pavement using sulfur extended asphalt modifiers. The project focused on achieving the objective of qualifying the suitability and comparing the performance of asphalt modifiers currently available on the market, in addition to Kuwait’s local sulfur, in order to extend the properties and enhance the performance of the conventional asphalt mixtures used to pave roads and highways. As a result of this project, researchers found that both existing asphalt modifiers on the market and local sulfur can be used to enhance the properties of asphalt used to pave roads. Results also showed that there was little difference between the performance of asphalt modifiers currently on the market and local sulfur.
