Laboratory Core Flooding Study of Burgan Minagish Field
Recycling wastewater to enhance oil recovery
To enhance the recovery of oil from formations, the industry resorts to secondary oil recovery techniques to maintain the desired production rates. Water is commonly injected in secondary oil recovery to maintain reservoir pressure. Due to the scarcity of water resources in Kuwait, the compatibility of Minagish formation waters with (individually) high salinity effluent water from gathering center and low salinity treated wastewater was examined. The use of these water sources for tertiary oil recovery, with and without surfactants, was also studied. The research demonstrated that low salinity treated wastewater leads to higher recovery both as secondary recovery and tertiary recovery, in comparison with the high salinity effluent water. The addition of surfactants was also found to lead to further enhanced oil recovery. It was also found that low salinity water does not lead to any significant formation damage.
