Assessment of Urbanization on Groundwater Levels and Quality in Kuwait
Reducing the effects of a rising water table
In Kuwait, urbanization is taking place at a rapid pace and its impacts on groundwater resources are important environmentally, economically, and socially. Previous studies and available data confirm a rise and change in behavior in the water table across Kuwait's residential areas. The WRDM Program initiated a study to investigate current and forecast future groundwater behavior up to the year 2030 in Kuwait City, its suburbs, Al-Jahra City, Al-Ahmadi City, and new proposed residential areas. The study allowed researchers to propose a variety of dewatering schemes to help reduce the impact of a rising water table on residential and commercial properties. Researchers have also been able to establish a monitoring network capable of helping decision makers plan for future development and manage environmental risk.
