Bioremediating Contaminated Soil at Mina Abdulla Refinery
Proving the environmental value of biotechnology
The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research was selected and hired by the Kuwait National Petroleum Company to provide consultancy services for the bioremediation of contaminated soil at Mina Abdulla (MAB) Refinery. Researchers from the Biotechnology Program successfully bioremediated 15,000 m3 of oil contaminated soil to the agreed upon cleanup level. The project was successfully completed in 6-9 months, less than the contracted 9-12 that was originally expected. The timely completion of the project demonstrates both the maturity of bioremediation technology to address treating contaminated soil and toxic waste streams and KISR’s expertise at cleaning polluted soil.
