United Nations Environment Program on Persistent Organic Pollutants

Collaborating with the UN to lead regional research

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are extremely toxic chemicals capable of accumulating in the bodies of animals and people who inadvertently ingest them. Even in small amounts, these chemicals are capable of causing harm, such as cancer or hormone disruption, in the human body and represent a significant risk to the natural environment. As a demonstration of KISR’s leadership and expertise in the field, KISR has been nominated and currently hosts the West Asia Center for United Nations Environment Program on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The EPC Program currently manages research in the region to establish baseline measurements of contamination levels, tracking the prevalence of POPs throughout the environment.
